Wrong Fuel in Car Symptoms: How to Tell if You Misfuelled
If your vehicle has suddenly started losing power, running roughly, or throwing up engine warning lights shortly after leaving a local petrol station, you might be dealing with a misfuelling emergency.
Many drivers misfuel completely by accident while distracted, only realizing their mistake when the vehicle begins to fail a few miles down the road.
Recognizing the symptoms of fuel contamination early can mean the difference between a simple roadside fuel drain and a catastrophic engine rebuild.
Below is our emergency diagnostic matrix to help you identify exactly what is happening under your bonnet.

Petrol in Diesel (Most Common & Most Dangerous)
What happens: Petrol acts as a solvent, stripping lubrication from high-pressure diesel fuel pumps and injectors, causing metal-on-metal friction and metal shaving contamination throughout the fuel system.
Key Symptoms: Loud engine knocking, severe loss of power, metallic grinding noises, dark/black smoke, sudden stalling, and check engine light.

Diesel in Petrol
What happens: Diesel is much heavier and less volatile than petrol. It clogs spark plugs, coats fuel injectors, and fails to ignite easily in a spark-ignition petrol engine.
Key Symptoms: Engine misfiring, struggling to rev or accelerate, heavy white or grey exhaust smoke, engine drowning/flooding, and total engine cut-out.

AdBlue in Diesel Tank (Extremely High Risk)
What happens: AdBlue is not fuel—it is a corrosive liquid mixture of urea and deionised water designed strictly for the exhaust system. When poured into a diesel tank, it rapidly corrodes metal fuel lines, crystallises inside high-pressure injectors, and can cause catastrophic engine failure if the ignition is turned on.
Key Symptoms: Immediate engine non-start, severe power drop within seconds of driving, white exhaust smoke, warning lights for AdBlue/SCR system error, and rapid engine stuttering/stalling.

Water in Diesel or Petrol Tank
What happens: Water is denser than fuel and sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank, directly where the fuel pump pickup sits. Water destroys the fine tolerances inside fuel injectors, causes internal rust, and starves the engine of combustible fuel.
Key Symptoms: Engine turning over but failing to start, violent engine shuddering or surging while idling, hesitation upon pressing the accelerator, misfiring, and "Water in Fuel Filter" dashboard warning light.

⚠️ Recognise these symptoms?
Do not attempt to restart your engine. Turning the key pushes contaminated fuel further into your engine components.
